PACIFIC – PERCUSSION

The percussion section from ‘PACIFIC – Classical Symphonic Orchestra

Webpage for the full orchestra project is here.

PACIFIC PERCUSSION is the percussion section from the forthcoming PACIFIC library (comprised of four sections: strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion). Each section will be sold individually.

PACIFIC PERCUSSION builds on what I learned on the Perfperc volumes and explores some ground beyond that in terms of instrumentation, mic positions, and the addition of ensembles. It leans towards cinematic/world/ensemble options with some standard orchestral percussion as well (traditional pitched timp, snares/bass drums etc) but no tonal percussion aside from that. Although not available yet for some time, the percussion from VOYAGE is (at this point) much more orchestral oriented, solo, and does have tonal percussion (like marimba, xylophone, glock, vibraphone, and piano).

This library includes repetition sampling on nearly everything with up to 4 speeds including “traditional” hits which don’t have the “pre-ambience” sound. The script triggers in the different speeds of reps (all of which have been balanced to each other) based on how fast you’re playing. Many of the patches include the 4th speed of rep which is essentially a “roll” rep speed.

Mic positions: close, mid, far/AB (I found Perfperc was lacking a good mid mic position).

Dynamics: generally extensive, sometimes up to 18-20dyn territory (should have more solid numbers once the library is closer to release).

RR: varies, but not nearly as extensive as the dynamics.

A rough instrument list for PACIFIC PERCUSSION is below.

Ensemble

– Six low, mixed-perc cinematic ensembles (different types of drums being played at the same time)

– Quasi “marching band”/drum corps ensemble (unsnared/muted snare and tenor drums)

– Taiko ensemble

– Snare drum ensemble (snared)

– Tenor drum ensemble (snared, little lower/beefier sounding)

– Stick ensembles (left and right stage)

– Bongo ensemble

– Tom ensemble (two tunings)

– Piatti ensemble

– Anvil ensembles (multiple)

– Sus cymbal ensemble

Solo

– Four individual taikos

– Timpani set 1 (original record, mostly first octave/lower register – more tonal sounding)

– Timpani set 2 (re-record, complete pitches – 2 oct)

– Tenor drum

– Snare drum

– Bass drum – center and side

– Lots of anvils

– Piatti (open and closed)

– Sus cymbal FX

Here are a few demo patches for Pacific – Percussion. I included the solo bass drum (normal + towards the rim [alt playing technique]), solo tenor drum (snared), and two ensemble sticks patches recorded at different places on the stage. Ensemble toms and taikos are also included. All of the patches have repetition sampling with multiple speeds of repetition as well, triggering in based on playing speed and allowing playable rolls on select patches (really fast reps). Sample start is set to a bit more delayed by default, but can be adjusted to something more responsive for playing in live if you’d like, and then turned back to the delayed setting to optimize cohesion.

There’s no register to limit since they’re atonal, and I certainly didn’t want to limit the dynamics, so these are essentially just fully-functional patches from the library that you may find use for even if you decide not to grab the full Pacific – Percussion library upon its’ release. These patches will be available until the end of the intro period (subject to change).

  • Pacific – Percussion – Ens. – Taikos DEMO FREEBIE.nki (16 DYNAMICS)
  • Pacific – Percussion – Ens. – Sticks 1 DEMO FREEBIE.nki (18 DYNAMICS)
  • Pacific – Percussion – Ens. – Sticks 2 DEMO FREEBIE.nki (17 DYNAMICS)
  • Pacific – Percussion – Solo – Bass Drum DEMO FREEBIE.nki (16/18 DYNAMICS – main/alt playing style)
  • Pacific – Percussion – Solo – Tenor Drum DEMO FREEBIE.nki (21 DYNAMICS)

As with the Pacific – Strings freebie, these are not quite final, release-candidate patches. They are beta stage, and the final patches in the release may contain adjustments to the GUI controls, editing/timing/the samples themselves, and scripting/behind-the-scenes/playability functionality. However, these patches are pretty close to complete. Enjoy! — JB
