ANGRY WOODWINDS PRO

Loud Action Toolkit

Angry Woodwinds Pro is a loud (ff-fff), bare-bones solo woodwinds library, recorded in the same space as Oceania, Oceania II, Angry Brass Pro – Ensembles, Angry Brass Pro – Soloists, Vista, the upcoming Voyage, and others.  It consists of five lean, yet energetic instruments – solo flute, solo piccolo, solo bassoon, solo clarinet, and solo oboe – with the capability to vary note lengths fluently from a tongued staccato to a longer marcato. All of the instruments feature round-robin attacks and releases, the latter of which come with two speeds to aid with note length flexibility (particularly for shorter notes and, as the flute and piccolo highlight best, measured tremolos). The library is intended for thematic, aggressive-leaning passages contextualized within an orchestral setting (as opposed to exposed, lyrical functions). The demos illustrate the type of usage which will be most idiomatic for this library, and are all performed with one patch per instrument (no key-switching between different articulations, etc).

  • Five individual soloists: solo flute, solo piccolo, solo bassoon, solo clarinet, and solo oboe
  • Multi-functional, looped patches with up to 5 RR on the attacks and releases, featuring performances derived from phrases
  • Two speeds of release samples which react to note length
  • Loud (ff-fff) dynamic, with EQ modeling on CC1/modwheel (based on recorded dynamic references)
  • Recorded in a hall* with close and decca mic positions
  • 48kHz / 24bit
  • NCW-compressed, ~742 MB total
  • Built for Kontakt 5.8.1 and above – full, retail version of Kontakt required
  • Download via Continuata

* the same hall as Oceania, Oceania II, Angry Brass Pro – Ensembles, and others

Sample Delay

You’ll notice some delay in the samples: 80 ms (based on close mic). Simply set your MIDI track settings to -80 ms. The sample assets are timed, so you can quantize and with -80 ms track delay it will be on the beat.

Library Limitations

  • Only one dynamic (loud).
  • Dynamics are EQ-modeled and inherently limited.
  • Because of the performance phrases they were edited from, the attacks (mainly on the decca mic) have some level of ambience decay before the attack.
  • On some pitches, there’s a transitional cross-fade sound from the attacks to the sustains they fade into, including some phasing at times (most apparent on the close). It’s most obvious on the lower registers.
  • There is also some phasing (most obvious on the close mics) on the sustains, from grafting together different shorter sustains to create a longer one.
