Vista II – Solo Cello Legato

VISTA II – SOLO CELLO LEGATO

The first module in the VISTA II series, exploring sympathetic-resonance legato

OVERVIEW

Vista II – Solo Cello Legato is the first module from Vista II. The library explores two types of legato – bow change and slurred (the latter added in the new v1.1 update) – recorded with a special “sympathetic resonance” approach. This approach causes more of the instrument to resonate when the musician plays the intervals in question and gives the musician a stronger frame of reference in terms of pitch, leading to more musicality and intonation accuracy.

Library Limitations

Here are some aspects of the library that might affect your purchasing decision. Putting together this list is always very subjective when I’m in the final stages of production, and just because something appears in library limitations here doesn’t mean it isn’t an “issue” in other PS libraries where I didn’t mention it in that library’s “limitations” area. Here are a few things, in no particular order:

Pre-note Ambience

You can hear the ring-out from a previous note, on the attacks. More obvious on farther mics (even with ADSR attack slope adjustments). Example shows farther mics, then a close mic for reference.

Noise

Noise reduction is minimal (less than Pacific – Ensemble Strings). And this is not noise floor work, it’s just subjective spot fixes on release samples. The audio in the Pre-Note Ambience section above shows what you can expect with the release samples. There are also some instances of instrument noise on certain intervals. A few examples:

Timbral Anomalies

For solo string legatos, this is nothing new with my libraries (the shift when interval fades back into sustain). I’ve done a lot to improve it over past libraries in this case, but here’s an example playing some more ‘troublesome’ intervals (with a couple less troublesome ones included for reference).

There are some anomalies in the sustain loops as well (mainly because they’re solo strings).

Other / Misc

Legato delay might be too long for some users’ preferences (180 ms based on the closest mic). In part because of the timbral sensitivity of the sustain start (that the interval fades into), it’s not possibly to control the sample offset from the GUI.

For the new slurred legato patch added in v1.1, the 2nd close mic is a little bit questionable and unfortunately doesn’t match the 2nd close mic from the original bow change legato patch.

v1.0 – Initial release.

v1.1 – Newly-recorded slurred legato patch added (VII – Sl Vc Leg – Slur Leg.nki). Fixes to the original bow change legato patch (VII – Sl Vc Leg – Bow Ch Leg.nki) including improvement of timbral transitions between certain intervals and sustains in the low range, some bump/click noises fixed on certain intervals, and other small fixes. Optimization of the naming convention for both patches.
